Make-Your-Own -Float for the NE Parade!

The Parade is on Tuesday June 21 at 5pm. It will be a Blast!

Once again, ArtShare will be hosting a series of free and open-to-all workshops where you will be able to create a personal float, mask, or sign to express yourself and wear as part of the 82nd Annual Northeast Parade!

ArtShare provides a space to work on your creation, materials, facilitation, ideas, and helping hands. Several years ago, we decided that there wasn't nearly enough representation in the parade of Northeasters just being themselves - not representing a business, their school, or marching band.

ArtShare will be the community group that pays for the parade entrance fee, secures a good place in the line-up on parade day, and gives you - yes, You - a group of friends, neighbors, and fellow community members to strut your stuff down Central Avenue.

We ask that if your children are interested in being part of the workshops (and Everyone! is welcome), that at least one adult is in attendance for the duration of your family's participation.

Take The Noon Whistle audio-guided walking tour! You can download it and take it any time or join others to take the walk. It starts outside of the Thorpe building and is about an hour.

The Noon Whistle Tour follows some of the founding footsteps of Northeast residents. In the past, as today, food is a vital part of Northeasters lives. When the Noon Whistle blew, workers at Aaron Carlson Millworks, General Mills, Crown Ironworks, and many other businesses and industries would wipe their brows and find a corner market or diner to grab some good homemade grub. On this tour you will be led through a neighborhood rich with history from the past and history that we are creating today. Some streets and businesses you'll walk past are familiar, some probably never noticed. You'll be sure to learn a lot of lore and find some more to explore.

We've turned that notion on it's head and are making sure that if you want, you can make a personal float, a mask, a costume for your bicycle or skateboard, etc....and march with us in the parade!

*Who knows!...... ArtShare is dedicated to Creating Shared Art Experiences for the Northeast Community. It's what we do. And we continually engage with people from all walks of life in our NE communities to come up with new projects and ideas.

Creating Shared Art Experiences for the Northeast Community

To kick off our 2011 season - specifically in support of the NE Parade workshops we will be facilitating in May/June - we invite you to a Fundraiser Party at Sen Yai Sen Lek on Tuesday, March 29th at 6:30pm. This event will include:

Complimentary Sen Yai Sen Lek appetizers
The dulcet tones of Karen Thomas and her violin
A raffle of art and technology goods
A sneak peak of "Noon Whistle", the newest of the NE Audio-Guided Walking Tours we created with a huge cast of local community members.

We are facilitating 4 free workshops to guide Northeast neighbors in creating and building wearable “floats”, masks and banners for the parade.

This is a community project: we want a wide audience of Northeasters to express themselves and march together!

We encourage folks of all ages and backgrounds who live or work in Northeast to represent the diversity of Northeast.

Workshops:
4 workshops - free and open to all
Saturdays May 29th, June 5th, 12th and 19th
11:30am -3:00pm at Edison High School
Attend one or more - however much time you need

Walking Tour Website Launched

Walk, listen and be "Northeast".

As of August 29th we have launched one of the three walks, "Never the Same River Twice". The "Noon Whistle" and "Trolley Tour" will be released this fall.

You can download these tours for free on your MP3 players or burn them onto a CD-R. ArtShare also has a limited number of MP3 players that we can loan out for groups.

Northeast Audio-Guided Walking Tour

Holland Neighborhood Improvement Association and ArtShare are offering an opportunity to be involved in an important community project. We are looking for 10 Northeast teens and 10 Northeast adults to be part of a 12 session collaboration creating three Audio-Guided Walking Tours of NE neighborhoods.

ArtShare will guide the participants through a process of collaborative story-telling rooted in personal experience in Northeast, Northeast history, and (audio) recordings of Northeast sounds and people. We could choose to create a tour about the history and future of Northeast businesses, churches of Northeast, industry in Northeast, Northeast topography (the way it was and how it is now) or the streets of Northeast. We will start this process with collective and collaborative experiences to spark everyone’s creative energy and go from there.

It is our plan put together tours that show northeast as a collective of many experiences and not a singular voice of the past, present or future. Therefore it is important that we have many people with diverse experiences to participate in the project: Old and new Northeasters, people of different age ranges, people who live here or people who just work here, anyone who contributes to the make up of a neighborhood. You don’t need to be a Minnesotan to be a Northeaster.

This project will result in audio-guided walking tours that can be accessed by downloading podcasts from the HNIA website or by picking up an iPod at various pick-up points (NE businesses and libraries), a website (linked to HNIA website) by which the neighborhood can follow the progress of the audio workshops and a celebratory podcasts release party.

ArtShare was commisioned to create a progressive experience that would allow the Pastors and congregation of Mercy Seat to explore the ideas of Rivalry and Scapegoating Mechanisms in a creative and provocative way.

Northeast Parade, July 2008
ArtShare offered workshops to build your own wearable float and march with us in the parade. Participants expressed themselves and their political/social views while creating and marching with their neighbors.

Artist Bios

Sara Hanson is a visual artist and metal sculptor. She is a happy homeowner in the Logan Park neighborhood after living in her northeast warehouse space for seven years. After Sara received her BFA in sculpture from the University of MN, she began her career as an arts instructor, mentor and advocate for people with disabilities at Interact Center for the Visual and Performing Arts. Sara received a Public Projects grant from FORECAST Public Artworks for the Interstellar Record Project. The project involved a workshop, community metal pour event and the creation of a public sculpture on exhibition at the Art Depot in Red Wing, MN. Recently, Sara founded BroadCasting Metal-W.O.W. (workshop on wheels), a traveling sculpture foundry providing a fun and educational community experience.

Jonathan Hamilton is an artist who has lived in Northeast’s Audubon and Windom Park neighborhoods for the last 6 years. He has been designing and leading creative workshops in schools, Park and Rec. programs, and community organizations such as the Walker Art Center, VSA, and Opportunity Resources over the course of his career. After earning his BFA and K-12 Art Education Certification from the University of Montana, Jonathan came to Minneapolis to work as the Director of Visual Arts at Interact Center for the Visual and Performing Arts from 2001-2006. He is now an Exhibition Technician for the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.

Jennifer Arave is a Minneapolis and Northeast based performance and conceptual artist. She works in the mediums of video & film, object performance, and conceptual public performance -- solo and collaboratively. Her work focuses on the interaction of people in the formation of identity. Her work places the art process paramount to the product. She has taught Visual Arts at the Interact Center for the Visual and Performing Arts for three years, a community of artist with disabilities. She has lectured and shown her work in Minneapolis, New York City, Burlington, VT and Boston. She received her BFA in Theater Directing from Virginia Commonwealth University and Her MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts in Performance Studies from Goddard College.

Anna Gove is currently the Director of the Inside Out Gallery at the Interact Center for the Visual and performing arts. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History from the University of Kansas. She currently resides in Northeast Minneapolis’ Windom Park neighborhood, and is committed to providing accessibility to the arts for people from all walks of life.
